Uncovering Cavities: How to Recognize the Potential Trouble

Now that the holiday season is over and we’ve all (hopefully) made oral health our priority for the New Year, it’s important to still keep a special eye out for one of our teeth’s biggest threats: cavities!

Many of us think of cavities as an affliction that typically affects our children’s teeth when they are first learning to cement their dental hygiene routines. However, adults are not immune to dangerous cavities (and the trouble they bring when they arrive).

In particular, given that we all enjoyed our share of sweets, treats and carbs this holiday season, we need to take extra care in avoiding these little problems that could become huge dental issues! Here are some common ways we can identify and recognize potential cavities:

Uncommonly sensitive teeth

The easiest (and quickest) way to recognize cavities is an increased sensitivity to pain on a specific tooth or in a particular region of the mouth. Typically, this sensitivity will be most painful when consuming cold drinks or foods that are high in sugar.

Severe halitosis (or bad breath)

No matter how hard you brush or how much mouthwash you swish through your mouth, you will never be able to rid yourself of bad breath if you have a cavity. On top of that, you may also notice a lingering bad taste in your mouth.

Holes or discoloration on surface

If left unnoticed or untreated for a significant period of time, cavities can start to create noticeable discolorations on the surface of the teeth. Whether light or dark, any discoloration is a sign that bacteria and acid have started to eat away at your enamel. Once enough enamel is destroyed, visible holes will appear in the surface of the teeth that are clear indicators of severe cavities.

While the only way to accurately confirm whether or not you might have cavities is to visit your dentist for an evaluation, these are some warning signs that can help us recognize potential problem areas.
