If you’ve ever had a toothache, you know just how painful they can be. These nuisances can make eating and daily life uncomfortable. When we have a toothache we know something isn’t right, but sometimes we’re just not sure what it is. “Toothaches can be caused by many different things,” explained Dr. Maryam Adibfar, one of the best dentists in Toronto. “It’s important to always contact your dentist if you’re experiencing pain or discomfort. They’ll be able to figure out what’s causing the issue and what can be done to address it.”
Why does my tooth hurt?
This is an important question to ask. Most toothaches and pains are caused by cavities. While cavities can often by the root cause, a full oral health exam by a trusted dentist will be able to determine the exact issue.
Let’s take a closer look at some other oral health issues that could be causing your teeth stress and pain:
1. Teeth grinding: If you grind your teeth at night, it can wear down the enamel and cause your teeth to move. This makes them sensitive and sore.
2. An impact to the jaw: Do you play sports where getting hit in the mouth or teeth is possible? Whether it’s a shoulder or a ball, a large impact to that area of your body can cause toothaches to occur. That’s why it’s always important to wear a mouthguard during those activities.
3. Bacterial infections: Infections in the nerve of the tooth, which is called an abscess, can cause significant pain.
4. Gum disease: While rare, this can cause painful toothaches and a lot of discomfort
5. Sinus or ear infections: This is a bit more unique, but these issues can actually cause toothaches. They’re also often accompanied by headaches as well.
What can I do to get rid of the pain?
If you have a toothache, sensitive teeth or are experiencing discomfort, there are some things you can do to ease the pain.
1. Over-the-counter pain medications like Advil and Tylenol can be taken to reduce the among of pain or discomfort you’re experiencing. But that’s only temporarily.
2. Rinsing with warm salt water can help reduce the severity of the pain.
3. Applying a cold towel or ice pack on the outside of the cheek can help reduce any swelling that might have occurred. This is especially important if you’ve been hit in the jaw or mouth.
What’s the most important thing to do if I have a toothache?
While some toothaches can disappear after trying some of the remedies noted above, it’s important that you book an appointment with you dentist if it has lasted longer than 24 hours.
“Leaving a toothache untreated can have significant impacts on your overall oral health,” said Dr. Maryam Adibfar, a leading dentist in Davisville Toronto. “If you’re experiencing pain, it’s critical that you don’t try to ignore it. The longer the pain last the more damage it could be doing to your teeth and oral health.”
For example, if you have an infection that requires the tooth to be removed, you will want to get in to see your dentist immediately. It’s always better to be on the safe side and book an exam with your trusted Toronto dentist if you’re experiencing any type of pain or discomfort. Identifying the issue early can make a world of difference.
“Some causes of a toothache are less serious than others,” explained Dr. Adibfar, a former Crest spokesperson. “If you’re also experiencing a fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling or hyper-sensitivity, you should rely on your dentist to take the right actions to address the issue.”
Some causes of toothaches such as an impact to the mouth cannot be prevented. However, flossing, brushing and maintain great oral hygiene can help prevent toothaches. Spending a little time each morning and evening taking care of your beautiful smile will pay off in the long run.
