Dr. Maryam Adibfar Debunks Some of the Most Common Oral Health Myths
Over the years, Dr. Adibfar has provided amazing results for patients across Toronto. From improved overall oral health to whiter teeth, Dr. Adibfar and her talent Toronto dental team has learned what it takes to keep your teeth looking beautiful.
Let’s debunk some oral health myths!
Oral Health Myth #1: You must brush right after eating
It is a common belief that we should be rushing to brush our teeth seconds after eating. While eating often creates an acidic environment in our mouth, or saliva gets to work immediately. It breaks down foods and helps neutralize the acid levels. Brushing immediately after eating can actually get in the way of this natural process.
“We recommend waiting 30 to 60 minutes before reaching for your toothbrush,” said Dr. Adibfar, one of Toronto’s leading dental authorities. “Let your mouth’s natural process do it’s job.”
Oral Health Myth #2: Toothbrushes today can last up to months
Actually, toothbrushes lose their effective as quite quickly as they collect bacteria easily.
“We recommend switching your toothbrush or power toothbrush head once every 2-3 months,” explains Dr. Adibfar. “This will ensure your toothbrush is delivering the results you expect.”
Oral Health Myth #3: Mouthwash can take care of bad breath
You might not know this, but mouthwash with alcohol can dry out the mouth and actually exacerbate bad breath.
While mouthwash may mask the problem temporarily, it does not have the ability to remove odour-causing bacteria. This is why brushing and flossing is so important to maintaining great oral health and fresh breath.
Oral Health Myth #4: Over the counter whitening products are JUST as good as the professional products
While many companies and brands may want you to believe this, it just simply isn’t true. There is actually little oversight when it comes to over the counter products. “This lack of regulation can often lead to false promises,” cautions Dr. Adibfar. “These products can also cause injury to your teeth, gums and tongue if used improperly.”
“We also recommend consulting with a trusted dental professional before starting any tooth whitening,” said Dr. Adibfar. “There may actually be reasons why you shouldn’t undergo teeth whitening at the moment. Our talented team of dental professionals will help determine which procedure is right for you and your mouth.”
Oral Health Myth #5: Teeth whitening can destroy your enamel and should be avoided
Actually, teeth whitening products will not weaken the enamel whatsoever. There may be a temporary change to the outer layer but it will not destroy your teeth’s enamel.
“The professional teeth whitening procedure we employ often includes calcium or natural minerals found in your teeth’s structure,” explains Dr. Adibfar. “Our approach helps reduce tooth sensitivity while delivering a more beautiful smile.
