Common Mistakes and Toothbrush Tips: Part 2

We recently took a look at 5 ways to improve your oral health by shedding light on some common toothbrush mistakes. Now that you’ve mastered those, let’s take a closer look at the other 5 toothbrush tips to redefine your oral health in 2015.

Toothbrush tips #6: Pick Any Oral Health Product Wisely
Whether it’s the toothbrush, floss or toothpaste, the products you choose can have a big impact on their effectiveness. When it comes to toothpaste, that is even more important.
Were you aware that some of the toothpastes that “brighten” or “whiten” can actually be too harsh for your teeth and gums? Having too many whitening particles present in your mouth can aggravate your gums and erode your tooth structure.
We often recommend selecting a simple fluoride version. You can switch between this and a whitening brand to minimize any harmful effects.
Speak to your dentist before you pick up your next tube of toothpaste. Lean on their knowledge of your teeth and gums. This will ensure you’re selecting the perfect toothpaste for the best benefits.
Toothbrush tips #7: It’s Not Just About Sugar
Acid can soften your tooth enamel. This can be found in energy drinks, sodas, candies and even healthy selections like juice and coffee.
If you are choosing sour foods or drinks, we typically recommend brushing 30 minutes later. Brushing immediately after can actually wear down the enamel quicker.
Toothbrush tips #8: Cleanliness is Key!
A toothbrush is a magnet for germs. Be sure to always rise your brush well with just water after brushing. This will rid the bristles of germs and leftover toothpaste that can harden the bristles.
Avoid storing it in a case as this can keep the bristles damp and cause germs to grow rapidly.
Toothbrush tips #9: Protect Your Toothbrush
The bathroom isn’t be cleanest place in the house. Don’t just leave your toothbrush on the counter. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind to ward off germs and maintain your toothbrush’s cleanliness. Keep your brush in a holder and stand it upright but be sure not to let it touch other brushes if stores together. Let the toothbrush air dry. A moisture brush breeds germs. Travelling? Get a cover that lets some air in.
Toothbrush tips #10: It Isn’t a Lifelong Partnership
Do you know how old your toothbrush is? Some of us probably can’t remember when we bought it. We recommend that you buy a new toothbrush every 3 to 4 months. This will ensure your toothbrush remains effective and helps improve your oral health. Tend to forget? Set yourself a recurring reminder in your phone. Then you won’t have to think about it.
Think your toothbrush is ready before the 3 month mark? Take a look at the bristles. Are they frayed and starting to break? This is a tell tale sign to buy a new toothbrush. You can always ask your trusted Toronto dentist which is the best kind of toothbrush for your mouth, teeth and gums.
