Start Early: Caring for Your Child’s Teeth

Start Early: Caring for Your Child’s Teeth

Before you lay your youngster in bed, there’s something even more important than a goodnight story: Strengthening your child’s teeth for a future of great oral health. As your Davisville Toronto dentist, I want to take this opportunity to take a closer look at how we can help you set your child up for oral health success.
What Harms Their Teeth?
Sweetened liquids, juice, milk and even formula can have damaging affects on your child’s tooth health. These liquids can stay in your youngster’s mouth for long periods of time. A great example of this is if they’re using a bottle or if they need a warm glass of milk to fall asleep.
What Can You Do?
How can you fight tooth tooth decay, prevent cavities and keep your child’s oral health strong? Here are a few great tips to keep their gums and teeth healthy:
  • Start early by cleaning your baby’s gums after each meal. This gets them used to that type of routine and protects their sensitive mouth.
  • Begin brushing you child’s teeth as soon as they appear. Be gentle and only use a little bit of toothpaste to start.
  • Never put your child to bed immediately after drinking sweetened liquids, juices or milk. If they have a pre-bed snack, make sure it’s before brushing!
  • With the exception of water, your child should be finishing drinks within about an hour.
  • Continue an oral health regime that works for your schedule. Try to keep it as consistent as possible. This brings familiarity to the routine.
The Bottom Line
Start an oral health routine as early as possible. Get your child used to the idea of brushing their teeth on a daily basis. More importantly, get them comfortable with the process and educate them on why it’s important for their overall health and happiness.
We recommend that you bring your child in for their first dental visit within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. Our team can get you and your child on a strong, lasting dental program towards a happy and healthy future!
