How to Protect Your Teeth This Winter

How to Protect Your Teeth This Winter

Protecting and caring for your oral health is a full-time job. By brushing, flossing, rinsing with mouthwash and keeping up with regular dental check-ups, you’re maintaining healthy and strong teeth.

“With the weather changing and the cold and flu season upon us, more people are thinking about their oral health,” explains Dr. Maryam Adibfar, one of the best dentists in Toronto. “We thought it was a perfect time to discuss how you can protect your teeth during the long winter months.”

Dry Mouth

This is a common issue that many people experience when the weather changes. Saliva is an important part of your oral health. This natural fluid rinses away food particles and rids your mouth of bacteria that can cause bad breath. But have you ever noticed that in the winter you tend to have a drier mouth? As we breathe, we lose moisture from our mouths. This actually limited the amount of saliva that is produced. Dry mouth is often much worse for those who have cold as they have to breathe through their mouth all day.

“A dry mouth makes you susceptible to plaque and bacteria build up,” says Dr. Adibfar. “We recommend drinking extra water throughout the day and staying hydrated to keep your mouth moisturized and positioned to keep your teeth clean.”

Sensitive Teeth

If you have sensitive teeth, you’ll notice it more than ever when the temperature drops below zero. Some people may feel pain as the cold air hits their teeth if the dentin on their teeth is exposed. This will likely occur if a tooth is cracked or the enamel has been worn down.

If you have exposed dentin, your teeth will be extremely sensitive to both extremes – hot and cold. You may feel pain as the cold air hits your teeth, but you will also feel discomfort if you try to warm up with a big cup of hot chocolate.

“If you have sensitive teeth, we recommend booking a dental appointment right away,” says Dr. Adibfar. “A trusted dentist will be able to ensure there aren’t any major issues to be concerned about and recommend toothpaste and mouthwash that can help improve your teeth’s sensitivity.”

Limiting the Impacts of Sweets and Treats

Ever since the trick-or-treaters stopped by the house it seems like there is always candy, sweets and chocolate on hand. Delicious desserts and snacks are part of why we love the holidays so much. But they can wreak havoc on your oral health if you don’t take the proper precautions.

The sugars and acids found in some of our favourite candy and sweets can wear down the enamel your teeth need to remain strong and healthy.

We’re not saying avoid your favourite treats and candy. The holidays are a time to indulge. However, we do recommend that you take action to keep your teeth healthy. “It’s important to brush, floss or at least rinse your mouth out with water after enjoying your favourite sweets,” explains Dr. Adibfar. “We also recommend to not indulge throughout the day. The longer sugars and acids are in contact with your teeth, the more damage it can do.”
