What is the leading cause of cavities? That’s a very common question. When we think of cavities, we immediately think: candy! But that isn’t the only cavity-causing culprit out there. We have easy access to high-sugar drinks and they are everywhere. Dr. Maryam Adibfar – one of Toronto’s top dentists – sees may patients – both young and old – who have developed cavities because sugary drinks. These somewhat seemingly harmless beverages are having a big impact on child’s oral health.
Cause of Cavities: The impact sugar has on your oral health – it’s bigger than you think
Sugar is connected to many health problems such as obesity and diabetes. But did you realize that the sugars contained in many of our favourite drinks can cause significant oral health issues like tooth decay? This is a growing issue for many children here in Toronto.
What drinks contain the most sugar?
Sugar isn’t just found in our favourite pops and sodas. Juice, flavoured milk, sports drinks and energy drinks can have significant amounts of sugar. Even those “healthy” drinks that seem so good for us can be filled with sugar.
“I always recommend that parents review the drinks that their children are consuming,” says Dr. Adibfar – one of Toronto’s top dentists. “It’s important to limit the consumption of high sugar drinks as much as possible. It all starts with becoming educated on what’s in the foods and beverages we’re enjoying.”
What impact does sugar have on our teeth?
When we drink juice or pop, we are exposing our teeth to cavity-causing bacteria that can have a significant impact on our overall oral health. Sugar promotes the growth of bad bacteria, which produces acid that can weaken our teeth’ enamel. The result is decay, sensitivity and potential cavities.
What you can do to protect your teeth from the side effects of sugar
There are many causes of cavities. But we aren’t recommending that you don’t enjoy your favourite juices or beverages. We typically recommend that you drink water between meals. This is when your mouth is cleaning and restoring its pH levels. If you or your children need a beverage before bed or at your bedside, ensure its water. If you consume milk or juice at this time, the sugars have more time to do damage
