Teeth Tips: The Kids are Heading Back-to-School!

It’s that time of year again where the kids put away the bathing suits and rollerblades and take out the pencils and paper to start another year of school.  You can hear parents cheering!

With that comes rushed mornings, bagged lunches and much more time away from your children – all opportunities for their dental health to go unchecked!

Until we can be confident in their ability to maintain their own oral health, we as parents need to do everything we can to help. As our kids head back-to-school, there is plenty that we can do to make sure that their smiles stay white, bright and healthy!

Here are some handy teeth tips to keep in mind:

  • Pack lunches with healthy options: There’s no doubt that the summer was filled with candy, sugar and sweets – but now’s the time to get serious! Cut back on the amount of sugary snacks and soft drinks and pack more fruits and vegetables in their lunches. Foods that are high in nutritional value are just as important as brushing to a healthy set of teeth.
  • Don’t leave your next new toothbrush replacement until your child’s next dentist appointment! With so much going on during the school year, it’s easy to forget when the last time you replaced their toothbrush was. While this might not seem like a big deal, it could actually be doing more harm than good. Find out how to pick the best toothbrush for your children!
  • Ensure that they are brushing and flossing PROPERLY twice a day: When school is in session, life can be hectic and, sometimes, a routine is hard to stick to. We need to try hard now so that their teeth don’t suffer later in life. A good rule of thumb would be to maintain your own morning and evening dental regiment and invite your children to join in. This isn’t only an opportunity for quality time, but it also ensures that you supervise their brushing and that no one in the house forgets!

And while these tips will help with your children’s dental health as they head back into the classroom, it’s also important to keep up with regular dental checkups. Don’t let what could’ve been a small, reversible issue creep up into something costly, painful and time consuming!
