The toothbrush is a common, everyday part of our lives. But have you? Wondered how we began using them? The toothbrush is an essential part of our daily oral health routine. We love the idea of using a little “time travel” to help our youngsters get excited about the idea of brushing their teeth and maintaining good oral health.
Back in time: Toothbrushes
The concept of teeth cleaning actually dates back to 5000 BC. During this time, tooth powder was used. This concoction was made up of a variety of ingredients found around the area during that time. Many believe that this ancient “toothpaste” was rubbed on a person’s teeth with the index finger. Some of us might still use this style of teeth cleaning when we’re in a rush or forget to pack a toothbrush.
Jump forward and the world was introduced to what was referred to as the “chewing stick”. It has been said that people chewers on certain aromatic twigs from trees to help freshen breathe. Over the years, this began to progress into more brush-like tools that were made from animal hairs.
Set the time machine for 1780. This is the year that witnessed the first mass-produced toothbrush. Again, they were made using animal hairs for the bristles.
In 1947, we were introduced to a more modern version of the toothbrush. Nylon bristles replaced the animal hairs. This was the ideal choice as they were much softer on a person’s teeth.
Toothbrushes today
We have come a LONG way from tooth powder and chewing sticks. People today have more choices when it comes to toothbrushes than ever before. From manual to electric, from swirling to pulsating, from soft to hard, and from blue to pink, the options and configurations are endless.
Technology and dental health advancements have made toothbrushes more effective in fighting plaque build up, preventing cavities and promoting strong oral health.
