Helping Kids Take Care of Their Oral Health

Helping Kids Take Care of Their Oral Health

By helping our kids to understand the importance of proper oral health early in life, we set them up for long-term health and a life-long, pearly white smile. As your Davisville Toronto dentist, I want to help you improve your child’s oral health with some insider tips.

As most parents know however, getting our kids to care about their teeth isn’t always the easiest thing to do – it’s not necessarily the most “fun” thing to do when they have video games, toys, TV and sports to distract them. But what can we do to get THEM to care about their oral health as much as we care about their oral health.

Here are some simple things that any parent can do to get their children on board with oral health and turn brushing and flossing into family fun:

  1. Pick a fun and happy song (at least 2 ½ to 3 minutes in length) that both you and your kids can brush along to – not only will this distract them, but it will also make sure they brush for the proper length of time.
  2. Find one of the many children’s books aimed at educating young kids about oral health– not only will this type of learning be fun, it will help them WANT to brush and floss and keep their fear of the dentist at bay.
  3. Create a reward system that will make sure your kids are brushing and flossing twice a day – keep track on a calendar using stickers and promise them that if they get enough, they’ll win a prize at the end of the week!
