A Healthy Summer: Dental Tips to Keep in Mind

Who doesn’t want a healthy summer? As we look towards warm weather, we can’t help but start to smile. The spring and summer months are filled with fun, great food and lots of exciting activities. “After months of cold weather, we can just imagine how excited you are to break out the shorts, enjoy the outdoors and savour our favourite foods,” says Dr. Maryam Adibfar, a leading Toronto dentist. “With all the excitement, we can sometimes forget about maintaining our oral health. But there are easy ways to keep your smile looking great without having to sacrifice anything.”

Let’s take a closer look at some simple tips that will keep your teeth and gums looking healthy and beautiful all summer long. Because who doesn’t want to be smiling as the sub beams down?

Tips for a Healthy Summer

Get in a Routine: We all become more active during the warmer months. Between trips, hectic schedules and work, our days can fly by. And without school, our routines are a bit different than we’re used to. Make sure you keep up a rigorous brushing and flossing routine. “Try keeping up with the same style of oral health routine you had during the school year,” says Dr. Adibfar. “This will keep oral health front of mind and make the transition back to the school routine seamless.”

Breakfast is the Most Important Meal of the Day: During the school year the mornings can be crazy and a bit stressful. We sometimes might opt for sugary cereals because they’re quick, easy and the kids love them. But they can wreak havoc on your oral health. “Try eating a healthy, balanced breakfast full of fruit, whole grains and lean sources of protein,” says Dr. Adibfar. “You can significantly reduce the amount of processed sugar consumed by creating a breakfast that’s healthy and delicious.”

Snack Wisely: Go for nuts, cheese and high-protein snacks like chicken bites or deli meat. Not only is this a great option for a healthy body, the protein consumed can help fight against harmful acid that is commonly found in your mouth.

Smart Hydration: The warm months usher in the start to our favourite activities. From hiking and canoeing to biking and road hockey, we’ve been patiently waiting to restart our favourite outdoor activities. As you sweat, you’ll want to rehydrate. “Choose water over sports drinks and juice,” says Dr. Adibfar. “There can be a lot of sugar found in our favourite sports drinks and juice, which can harm our teeth. Water is a great way to cleanse your mouth and stay hydrated.”

Get a Toothbrush Upgrade: We can typically forget to get a new toothbrush during the school year. If it’s been 3 months or more, it’s time to get a new one so your brushing is effective in keeping your teeth healthy.

Make Time for Your Dentist: While summers are busy, you now have a bit more flexibility to go to the dentist. Take full advantage of your time to get your cleanings, exams and any necessary procedures done. “Making time to get to your dentist can help set you up for oral healthy success,” explains Dr. Adibfar. “Together we can keep you smiling throughout the summer.”
