We’ve been taught the importance of brushing since we were youngsters. It’s almost second nature. We hardly even think about it. It’s just part of our routine. Proper brushing is a central part of great oral health. It can help keep your teen white, cavity free and can help you avoid gum disease. But we all make toothbrush mistakes. It’s common.
We can all brush up on our oral health skills. In part one of this series, we’ll take a look at 5 easy tips that can help improve your brushing and your oral health.
1. Choose the Right Toothbrush
Do you know if you have the right toothbrush for your mouth, gums and teeth? Sometimes we don’t even put in the thought. We just pick one off the shelf. Think about the size of your mouth. Are you straining to open wide enough? This shouldn’t be the case. Think about the bristles a well. You don’t want them to be too stiff or you’ll hurt your enamel and gums.
Electric or manual? It’s really a personal preference because both can deliver exceptional results. Either way, we highly recommend you do your research before purchasing either style.
2. Time is Your Friend!
How many times do you brush per day? Is it the recommended twice daily? We hope so! But even if you’re brushing three times a day, you have to keep duration in mind. You should be brushing for 2 minutes. But many people fall short of this benchmark.
What can you do to make it easier to hit this benchmark? Set yourself a timer. This way there’s no guessing. Another easy trick is to divide your mouth into four sections and give each one 30 seconds of time. Some electric toothbrushes and mobile phone apps have engaging ways to time yourself.
3. Moderation is Key
Don’t overdo it. More doesn’t always mean better. Too much brushing can actually wear down your enamel and aggravate your gums.
It doesn’t take a lot to remove plaque if you’re brushing correctly. Don’t bear down too hard. Have a gentle touch.
4. Practice Makes Perfect
The duration your brushing for and the toothbrush you’re using are two important parts of the equation. But are you brushing correctly?
Wide, side-to-side strokes can actually cause aggravation along the gum line. So what’s the best practice? Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle and make fluid, up and down motions. Use short strokes and don’t rush. Don’t forget your back molars and your tongue!
5. Don’t Fall into the Same Old Routine
Routine is great when it comes to oral health. But many of us start brushing in the same spot each time. This can cause us to get lazy and complacent. Start in a new spot each time you brush. And while you’re brushing, keep track of where you’ve been. You want to ensure you get all the surface areas so plaque doesn’t have the chance to build up.
Most importantly, rely on your trusted Toronto dentist for advice and insight that will keep your teeth beautiful and healthy!
