5 Common Tooth Problems to Watch Out For

In our pursuit to healthy teeth and a beautiful smile, there are sometimes barriers we will run into. Some are natural and some can be caused by other factors such as activities. We all want a beautiful set of teeth and great oral health.

Dr. Maryam Adibfar – one of Toronto’s top dentists – shared her thoughts on the most common tooth problems that her patients experience and what should be done to address them. Let’s take a closer look at how you can keep your teeth healthy and make the right decisions about your oral health if you are experiencing any of these common problems.

1. Toothaches

Toothaches are fairly common and can be brought on by a number of factors. The first thing you should do is book yourself a dental appointment to identify the specific cause of your toothache. In the meantime, rinsing your mouth with warm water, flossing and visiting your pharmacy for over-the-counter pain medicine can help prevent further discomfort. If you notice swelling, heightened sensitivity or other irregularities, Dr. Maryam Adibfar recommends seeing your dentist as soon as possible. A thorough exam and teeth cleaning can help identify the issue and the right course of action to address it.

2. Stained Teeth

Do you love coffee, wine and certain fruits? Do you smoke or take certain medications? These things can all impact the colour of your teeth. Stained teeth are very common and can have a significant impact on your oral health, beautiful smile and confidence. But there are ways to address this very common issue. A our Davisville dental office, we use teeth whitening processes that can deliver incredible, long-lasting results. You may always want to use a whitening toothpaste in between visits.

3. Cavities

Cavities can be very painful. They can be brought on by a lot of different things including sugar and inconsistent oral hygiene. Cavities form when plaque builds up on your teeth and weakens the enamel. Both adults and kids can get cavities and they can have a big impact on your oral health. To prevent cavities, Dr. Adibfar recommends regular dental check ups, brushing at least twice a day, flossing regularly, avoiding high sugar foods and snacks and scheduling regular teeth cleanings.

4. Cracked Teeth

This often happens as a result of a sport. Dr. Maryam Adibfar sees many patients who might have a cracked tooth because of sport they were playing. That’s why she always recommends wearing a protective, well fitting mouth guard during impact activities and sports. If you have a cracked tooth, immediately schedule an appointment with you dentist. They may be able to save the tooth, fill in the crack and prevent any further damage.

5. Sensitivity to Cold

People can develop sensitivity to cold fairly easily. Have you every tried to enjoy your favourite ice cream or beverage only to be shocked by pain as the cold hits your teeth? This can cause a significant amount of discomfort. Dr. Maryam Adibfar explains that the first step is to find the root cause of your sensitivity. There could be many reasons, including a cavity, chipped teeth, exposed roots or worn enamel from grinding. Book a dental appointment immediately. A trusted, Toronto dentist can help identify the problem area and can provide the proper treatment to get your teeth back in tip-top shape. Don’t suffer. Rely on your dentist to help you improve your oral health so you can get back to enjoying your favourite foods and beverages without having to fear the pain of sensitivity.
