10 Tips to Improve Your Child’s Oral Health

10 Tips to Improve Your Child’s Oral Health

Many parents believe they don’t need to worry about their child’s oral health until they actually have teeth. While it makes sense, it isn’t the case. Laying the foundation for a strong set of teeth can start before that. By educating your children and developing oral care routines at an early age, you’re setting them up for a lifetime of bright smiles. This will also help prevent tooth decay, cavities and other oral health problems that can develop.

But where do you start? Our talented Davisville dental team out together some easy tips that can help set your children up for oral health success.

1. When We Say Start Early… We Mean Early!

Get into the habit of cleaning your infant’s gums after each feeding. Using a soft, water-soaked gauze will do the trick.

2. Brush Carefully

As your baby’s teeth begin to erupt, now is the time to start using a toothbrush during cleanings. Remember that you should use a child’s soft-bristled toothbrush and not too much toothpaste. Take it slow and get them used to the process, feeling and routine.

3. Passing on the Knowledge

Setting your children up for oral health success depends on their understanding of its importance. While discussing the importance of proper oral health care is critical, so is your ability to show them proper techniques.

Start introducing them to the techniques around 2 years old. Let them try and then gently brush them again. When they them 5 or 6, they should now have the dexterity to brush their own teeth based on your great examples. You can also begin to introduce flossing into your daily routine.

4. Avoid Sugar Where Possible

We never recommend not having sugar. We know it’s a part of a typical child’s diet. However, it’s important to understand that when a child eats sugars, it takes saliva approximately 30-40 minutes to react to the acidity that is created by the bacteria. Having sugary snacks throughout the day could mean your youngster’s mouth is more acidic and increases their chances of cavities and decay.

It’s always important to watch what they eat and limit the amount and frequency of sugar that is ingested.

5. Become Regulars at Your Dentist

We typically recommend that a child’s first dental visit should happen around their first birthday. From there they can partake in regular dental check ups. Our Toronto dental team takes the time to teach you and your children how to prevent cavities, oral health disease and how to watch out for other issues that can develop.
